At a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital during the Korean War, three gifted Army surgeons keep the wounded alive while treating military routine as something to mock, bend, and dodge. Donald Sutherland, Elliott Gould, and Tom Skerritt are the doctors at the center of the unit, using gallows humor and constant mischief to offset the pressure of surgery and the steady flow of casualties. Their antics needle everyone around them, especially Robert Duvall’s sanctimonious major and Sally Kellerman’s rule-bound nurse, as Robert Altman frames the camp as both a workplace and a running battle with Army bureaucracy.
