Music is forbidden in Miguel’s family, but the 12-year-old in Mexico wants nothing more than to follow his idol Ernesto de la Cruz onto the stage. Anthony Gonzalez is Miguel, whose attempt to prove himself sends him into the Land of the Dead during Día de Muertos. There he falls in with Gael García Bernal’s Héctor, a fast-talking skeleton with his own unfinished business. As Miguel searches for a way back home, family stories, ancestors, and long-held traditions start to point toward the reason music was banned in the first place.
