A near-retirement detective and his impulsive new partner are pulled into a string of murders modeled on the seven deadly sins in an unnamed, rain-soaked city. Morgan Freeman is Somerset, patient and methodical, while Brad Pitt’s Mills charges into the case with far less restraint. As each crime scene points to a killer turning punishment into ritual, Somerset searches old libraries and forensic details for a pattern before the next body appears. Gwyneth Paltrow’s Tracy, Mills’s wife, brings the couple’s home life into a story otherwise defined by precinct rooms, cramped apartments, and David Fincher’s bleak urban noir.
