As the world’s superpowers escalate the nuclear arms race, Christopher Reeve’s Superman takes an unusually political step: he vows to rid the planet of nuclear weapons. That declaration puts him on a collision course with Gene Hackman’s Lex Luthor, freshly out of jail and looking for a way to turn Superman’s strength against him. Using a strand of the hero’s hair, Luthor creates Nuclear Man, a manufactured rival with powers of his own. Between Clark Kent’s Daily Planet life and globe-spanning crises, the film sends Superman from public appeals and rescue missions to a final conflict that reaches beyond Earth.
