Barbara Stanwyck is Ann Mitchell, a fired newspaper columnist who dashes off a fake letter from an unemployed “John Doe” threatening suicide as a protest against society’s failures. When the story catches fire, the paper brings her back and recruits Gary Cooper’s John Willoughby to stand in as the invented man for public appearances and radio broadcasts. What begins as a newsroom stunt swells into a grassroots movement, with Ann trying to script its message while Edward Arnold’s ambitious publisher sees a chance to turn public outrage into political power. Frank Capra stages the story between press cynicism, populist spectacle, and a growing romance at its center.
