On the Coeur d'Alene reservation in Idaho, Victor Joseph heads to Arizona after news that the father who abandoned him has died. Adam Beach is Victor, carrying years of anger; the only way he can afford the trip is by letting Thomas Builds-the-Fire come along. Evan Adams’s Thomas is a talkative outcast in oversized glasses, forever retelling stories about the fire that killed his parents and the man who once saved him. What starts as a bus ride to collect Arnold’s ashes becomes a road trip through family history, old wounds, and two very different ways of remembering the same past.
