On the streets of 1957 New York, two young people from rival gangs fall for each other as the standoff between the Jets and the Sharks tightens around them. Ansel Elgort is Tony, and Rachel Zegler's Maria meets him in a city where romance is quickly overtaken by loyalty, racism, and neighborhood lines no one crosses lightly. Steven Spielberg directs this new screen version of the Broadway musical, with Ariana DeBose's Anita and David Alvarez's Bernardo giving the feud its sharpest edges, and Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim's songs threaded through dances, crowded streets, and tense encounters.
