Michael Angarano is Jason, an American teenager obsessed with Hong Kong kung fu movies who finds the Monkey King’s legendary staff in a Chinatown pawnshop and is suddenly swept back to ancient China. There he falls in with Jackie Chan’s Lu Yan and the Silent Monk (Jet Li), joining a band of warriors on a quest to free the imprisoned Monkey King before the weapon falls into enemy hands. Rob Minkoff’s film mixes time-travel fantasy with wuxia folklore, moving from training and temple stops to staff fights and clashes with a warlord’s forces.
