Victorian England’s fashionable diagnosis of “hysteria” puts a young doctor inside an unusually busy practice, where the prescribed treatment for female patients is manual stimulation. Hugh Dancy is the idealistic physician trying to keep up; Jonathan Pryce’s older specialist has turned the awkward procedure into a thriving business. As demand grows and the work becomes physically impossible to sustain, the pair look to new electrical technology for help — a line of medical experimentation that points toward the invention of the vibrator.
