Maggie has a plan: have a baby on her own in New York with a sperm donor. Greta Gerwig is Maggie, whose carefully organized future veers off course when she falls for John, a married anthropology professor and stalled novelist. Ethan Hawke’s John leaves his volatile academic marriage behind, and Maggie soon finds herself raising a daughter inside the very kind of complicated household she meant to avoid. As co-parenting, friendship, and second thoughts start to tangle together, Maggie begins to suspect that John and his formidable ex-wife Georgette may make more sense with each other than either of them does with her.
